Driving Rules

31 Securing the vehicle

Before leaving the vehicle, the driver must stop the engine and prevent the vehicle from rolling away and being used by unauthorized persons (the windows must be closed, car keys must be taken, etc.).

On a slope, the handbrake is to be put on. Furthermore, any other actions to secure the vehicle against rolling away has to be taken, such as switching to the lowest gear or deflecting the wheels against an obstacle at the edge of the road.

On heavy slopes, the vehicle has to be additionally secured by means of chocks or makeshift bases. For trailer hitches and detached trailers, chocks are to be installed even on lighter slopes. The chocks must be removed from the road before driving away.
