Driving Rules

29 How to deal with trams

The tram tracks are to be kept clear and priority given in case a tram approaches. Exception: If the tram runs from a secondary road to a main road, it has to give the vehicles on the main road priority.

Vehicles must not stop on the tram tracks or closer than 1,50 m next to the next track.

Overtaking: The driving tram is overtaken on the right. If this is not possible, it may be overtaken on the left, but only if no road enters and any hindrance to the oncoming traffic is avoided.

A stopped tram can only be overtaken at a slow speed. It is to be overtaken on the right, where a protective island is present. If there is no protective island, then can only be overtaken on the left. In the case of poor visibility on the road, stop 2 m behind the tram. Caution: Pedestrians may want to cross the road after disembarking.

In the case of stops without a protective island, if the passengers of a train or tram get off on the traffic side, the vehicles traveling on the same side of the street have to stop until the passengers clear road.
