Driving Rules

Rules as pedestrians

Pedestrians are not allowed to suddenly enter pedestrian crossings. The road should be crossed with caution at the shortest crossing. Pedestrians must use pedestrian crossings, overpasses or underpasses, if they are less than 50 m away.

Pedestrians on the road should be particularly careful when walking in front of and behind stopped vehicles.

On pedestrian crossings without traffic regulations the pedestrians have priority, except against trams. However, pedestrians are not allowed to use the right of way, if the vehicle is already so close that it cannot stop in time.

Pedestrians, if available, must use the footpaths. Otherwise, they have to walk on the edge of the road and, if there are particular dangers, behind each other. Unless there are special circumstances (for example, no alternative), they have to stay on the left side of the road, especially at night and outside of towns.

At night and when the weather requires it, the pedestrians are to be highlighted on the roads, at the least on the front and on the back with a yellow, not dazzling light.
