20 Braking distance

The braking distance depends mainly on the road adhesion of the vehicle and the speed. Also, the inclination of the route plays a role. Thus, the braking distance is longer when driving downhill than on driving on a flat surface.

Rule of thumb – On wet roads

Braking distance = Speed in km/h x Speed in km/h
100

Example: Braking distance at a speed of 80 km/h.

Calculation: 80 x 80 : 100 = 64 m

Example 2: Braking distance at a speed of 40 km/h.

Calculation: 40 x 40 : 100 = 16 m
