17 Calculation of the overtaking distance The speed difference for overtaking should be at least 20 km/h. The viewable distance should be twice the overtaking distance. Rule of thumb
Example: The overtaking vehicle travels at 80 km/h, the vehicle to be overtaken travels at 60 km/h. Calculation: 80 km/h x 80 km/h : 20km/h = 320 m Example 2: The overtaking vehicle travels at 60 km/h, the vehicle to be overtaken travels at 30 km/h. Berechnung: 60 km/h x 60 km/h : 30km/h = 120 m Note: The greater the speed difference during overtaking, the shorter the overtaking distance.
