Driving Rules

16 Overtaking

Overtaking is only permitted on the left side.
Exception: Vehicles, which have moved into the line for turning to the left, must be overtaken on the right.

Anyone who overtakes must pay particular attention to the other road users, especially those he wants to overtake. Who is overhauled, must not accelerate. The announcing, faster moving vehicles must be allowed to overtake.

It is necessary to maintain sufficient distance from the preceding vehicle (better possibility to accelerate and visibility) before overtaking.

The driver who wants to overtake shall not hinder subsequent vehicles. He must not overtake if there are obstacles in front of the preceding vehicle, such as construction sites, vehicles which moved into the line or pedestrians crossing the road. He must not overtake if the driver of the preceding vehicle indicates the intention to turn left.

Before overtaking, overtaking should be indicated with the turn signal and carefully turn out. While overtaking, sufficient lateral distance must be maintained, the higher the speed, the higher the required distance. After overtaking, the driver has to turn in again as soon as there is no danger for the overtaken road user. The turn must be indicated with the turn signal.
