13 Using the lights

LichterMotor vehicles must always be illuminated during the journey. The lighting must be used in such a way, that no one is blinded unnecessarily.

When driving, use the following:

a. From the beginning of dusk until dawn, in poor visibility conditions and in tunnels, the low beam lights should be used during the journey.
b. Otherwise, the daytime running lights or the low beam lights shall be used for motor vehicles.

If required, the high-beam lights can be used, high-beam lights illuminate the road at a distance of at least 100 m. The high-beams should be switched over to low beam lights:

a. In time before crossing with another road user or beside a road with an approaching train.
b. While driving behind other drivers and backwards.

In the case of prolonged stopping, e.g. in front of railway crossings or traffic lights, the driver can switch to parking lights.

Fog lights

The fog lights and rear fog lights may only be used when visibility is considerably restricted due to fog, snow or heavy rain.
