3 Learning trips

L When driving a motor vehicle, owners of a provisional license must carry a blue board with a white "L" on the back, in a clearly visible place. Remove the board when no learning trips are taking place.

Learning trips on motor vehicles may only be undertaken with a companion who:
- For more than three years, has the relevant driving license
- No longer has the driver's license on probation
- Is at least 23 years old

On learning and testing trips with motor vehicles, the companion must sit next to the driver's seat, except on training areas, during reversing or during parking. The companion must be able to reach at least the hand brake.

On a motorbike, or on other motor vehicles with which one is allowed to carry out learning trips without a companion, the driving student is not allowed to carry passengers who do not themselves have the appropriate driving license.

Driving students are only allowed to drive on busy roads when they are adequately trained; motorways and expressway only when they are ready for testing.

Learning phase

Those who are under 20 years old and want to take the practical driving test, must have collected at least 12 months of driving experience with the provisional driving license.

Driver training

Prior to obtaining the driver's license in categories A, A1 or B, a course on traffic education must be attended.

The duration of the course is eight hours in total and must be completed with a driving instructor. Course participation requires the possession of a provisional license.

Anyone who wants to obtain the category A or A1 driver's license, must complete the practical basic training course with a holder of the category A driving instructor license, within four months of issuing the learning certificate.

The practical basic training takes twelve hours.
