1 ID cards

Anyone who drives a motor vehicle requires a driving license. Anyone who is taking driving lessons, requires a provisional license.

Motor vehicles and their trailers may only be taken on the road with a vehicle license and license plates. The vehicle license is issued only if the statutory liability insurance exists, the vehicle complies with the regulations and is road worthy.

Any change relevant to the card (e.g. change of place of residence or change of ownership) which requires a change or the replacement of a card, must be reported to the authority within 14 days.

Driving license categories:

A: Motorcycles with an engine power of not more than 35 kW and a ratio of engine power and idle weight of not more than 0,2 kW/kg.

Minimum age: 18 years.

The above category is also sometimes referred to as category A restricted. Category A also includes motorcycles with an engine power of more than 35 kW and a ratio of engine power and idle weight of more than 0.2 kW/kg. The learner's license for this category A without performance restriction is issued only to persons who have held the category A restricted driver's license for at least two years and have not committed any violation of the provisions of road traffic law that leads or has led to a revocation of the driver's license.

Validity of provisional license: 4 months, is extended by 12 months after practical basic training.

In the case of learning trips, the provisional licence is required, but no accompanying person is required.

Practical basic training: 12 hours (valid for category A and A1)

Driving license valid for vehicles of categories: A1, F, G and M

A1: Motorcycles with an engine displacement of not more than 125 cm³ and a maximum engine power of 11 kW.

Minimum age:
15 years for motorcycles with a maximum speed of 45 km/h, engine displacement up to 50 cm³ and a maximum engine power of 4 kW
16 years for motorcycles with an engine displacement of up to 125 cm³

Validity of provisional license: 4 months, is extended by 12 months after practical basic training.

In the case of learning trips, the provisional license is required, but no accompanying person is required.

Practical basic training: 12 hours, valid for category A and A1.

Driving license valid for vehicles of categories: F, G and M

B: Motor vehicles and three-wheeled motor vehicles of a maximum weight of 3500 kg or 4250 kg for zero-emission vehicles (e.g. electric cars) and not more than eight seats excluding the driver's seat.

Minimum age: 18 years. (Provisional license: 17 years)

Validity provisional license: 24 months

Driving license valid for vehicles of categories: F, G and M
